The Department of History at the University of Victoria consists of 34 regular faculty, ten adjunct faculty, and sessional instructors. The department offers a rich variety of undergraduate courses at the introductory and advanced levels, as well as programs leading to M.A. and Ph.D. degrees. The main geographical areas of instruction, supervision and research are American, Asian, British, Canadian, European, and World history. Specialists cover periods from the Middle Ages to the present.

He currently holds the General Mark W. Clark Visiting Professorship of Military History at the Citadel. DeVries is a leading expert in medieval military history, with a focus on war and technology. He is the author of thirteen books including: Medieval Military Technology; Rhodes Besieged: Stone, Cannon, and Men; Joan of Arc: A Military Leader; Infantry Warfare in the Early Fourteenth Century: Discipline, Tactics, and Technology; and The Norwegian Invasion of England in 1066.
